Clan Flanagan is a family association affilliated with the Clans of Ireland. The goals of the Clan are to provide a venue for sharing historical and genealogical information as well as social interaction between Flanagans of all lines. At present there are no dues and the organization is essentially an "online only" entity. Membership is open to anyone who has an ancestor named Flanagan.
Spelling variations of the name include: Flanagan, Flanaghan, Flangan, Flanigan, Flannagan, Flannigan, Flanningan, Flanikin, Flanakin, Flanagin, Flanigin, Flenniken, Flannacan, Flannacain, and any of these prefixed with an O'. We expect there are likely to be more. All variations are welcomed into Clan Flanagan. What other spellings of the name have your researches uncovered?
The surname Flanagan is descriptive in origin, "Flann" meaning red or ruddy. Most sources suggest that it means "red-headed" though some suggest that it refers to a ruddy complexion. Several distinct families with the surname emerged in Ireland, arising in different locales, including the counties of Fermanagh, Offaly, Roscommon, Waterford, and Westmeath.
We encourage members to participate in the Clan Flanagan's email list. Although we do not require subscribing to the list at present, participation enhances communications and voting and is completely free - joining the email list is considered applying for membership. Clan Flanagan's email list has become an important place for members to share genealogical information, to explore the traits that Flanagans may have in common, and it has become a place where members often exchange thoughts and prayers during times of crisis and stress. It is a place which facilitates contact between individuals who share Flanagan ancestry and the coordination of periodic Clan Flanagan gatherings.
There is an email list at RootsWeb that is devoted to the Flanagans, also. To subscribe to FLANAGAN-L, send a message to FLANAGAN-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains in the body of the message the command "subscribe" and no other text. No subject line is necessary, but if your software requires one, just use "subscribe" as the subject, too.
We are hopeful that the data collected in the Family Tree DNA Flanagan DNA Project may provide clues for solving the "Brick Walls" that we run into as we attempt to link the lines of our Flanagan ancestry back to their origins in Ireland. We encourage your participation.
Membership in Clan Flanagan is open to anyone who has an ancestor bearing the surname Flanagan (regardless of spelling variations), and no individual may be denied membership on the basis of race, religion, political affiliations and views, or gender [including sexual orientation and gender identity]. Our Constitution codifies membership requirements, rights, and responsibilities, officers within the organization, and other pertinent issues. Perhaps, sometime in the future, it may be necessary to implement a small annual membership fee. For the time being, Clan activities and business will primarily be via the electronic means such as the email list and through this website.
Anyone interested in joining Clan Flanagan may apply by sending an email to the Yahoo group, Clan Flanagan, or by joining Clan Flanagan's email list. Membership requests may also be directed to the Secretary/Treasurer of Clan Flanagan. The information we require includes name, age, and mailing address, as well as a pedigree showing the descent from your Flanagan ancestor.
